There is no single scan frequency for every computer. Real-time protection handles ongoing activity, while on-demand scans provide a scheduled or targeted review. Base the schedule on how the PC is used and what changed since the last scan.
A practical routine
- Routine scan: run it weekly or on a recurring schedule for a normally used home PC.
- Quick check: use it after a suspicious download, unexpected pop-up, or other new symptom.
- Full scan: run after a confirmed infection, when symptoms persist, or when the computer has not been checked for a long time.
- Custom scan: use for a new USB drive, download folder, archive, or another specific location.
Before and after the scan
Update the Threat List first. Review detections rather than applying one action to every item, and quarantine uncertain objects. Restart when cleanup requires it, then scan again if the same symptom returns.
Avoid unnecessary scanning
A daily Full scan usually adds disk activity without providing a matching benefit on a stable system. Keep real-time protection active, install Windows and browser updates, and schedule intensive scans when the PC is powered on but not needed for demanding work.
